⏰ Why “Early” Matters
- Research shows that starting appropriate intervention between 18 and 36 months helps improve a child’s cognition, language, adaptive skills, and social communication
- Early childhood is a period of strong neuroplasticity — identifying needs and providing support earlier is generally more beneficial

🌱 Option 1: Klinik Kesihatan (Government Health Clinic)
💡 Lowest cost (some services free); an important entry point into government referral and funded services
Children are usually first assessed by a medical officer, with a family medicine specialist involved if needed.

Your child doesn’t have to wait for a formal diagnostic report before getting help. While waiting for assessment, you can consider the following based on your child’s current needs:

- General paediatricians with a special interest in child development and autism: Depending on their individual training and clinical experience, they may provide in-depth assessment and integrated management. They may also prescribe relevant medication, including medication for ADHD. Their training, experience and assessment services may not be stated in the NSR, so parents should confirm these directly before making an appointment.
- Clinical psychologists: A comprehensive assessment may include cognitive abilities, behaviour and adaptive functioning. Clinical psychologists cannot prescribe medication or sign the medical certification section of an OKU application.
- General psychiatrists: In government hospitals without a child and adolescent psychiatrist, general psychiatrists commonly manage children and adolescents with autism or ADHD. Some psychiatrists in private practice do not see children or adolescents, so parents should confirm this before making an appointment.
